As a newborn, your baby will sleep for up to 18 hours
As a newborn, your baby will sleep for up to 18 hours but not at a stretch. She will do between two and four hour naps several times through the day and night.
At this point you can help her learn the difference between day and night so that she keeps her waking hours for the day. As she grows, she will need less sleep and you can start a sleep routine
At this point you can help her learn the difference between day and night so that she keeps her waking hours for the day. As she grows, she will need less sleep and you can start a sleep routine
Why does my baby have trouble sleeping? What sleep strategies can I try? What can I do if lack of sleep is affecting my routine?
Why does my baby have trouble sleeping?
Babies wake in the night for all sorts of reasons. You are not alone if you are having difficulty getting your baby to sleep all night. Many mums find that their babies have sleep problems, particularly refusing to go to bed or waking in the night. Often, the two go together. As your baby starts reaching milestones in her physical and mental development, she may wake in the night to try out the exciting new skills she has learned, and be unable to settle back down.
An unwell baby may have disrupted sleep patterns. Your baby may want to nap at different times during the day, which could make her bedtime later. She may even be reluctant to go to bed at night or start waking up during the night when she usually sleeps through.
What sleep strategies can I try?
There are different sleep strategies, from crying it out at one end of the spectrum to co-sleeping at the other. It's up to you to decide which one suits you and your family. You can start by regulating your baby's sleep patterns and teaching her good sleep habits early on. The following tactics can help your baby to sleep well from as early as six weeks. Do bear in mind, whichever approach you take, it works better if you consistently follow it:
- Follow a clear daily routine Bedtime is likely to go more smoothly if you keep your baby's daily routine consistent. If she naps, eats, plays, and gets ready for bed at about the same time every day, your baby will be much more likely to fall asleep without a struggle.
- Make daytime feeds social and lively and night-time feeds quiet and calm. This will help your baby set her body clock and learn the difference between day and night.
- Give your baby a chance to fall asleep on her own from about six to eight weeks. Put her down on her back when she's sleepy, but still awake. If you rock or feed your baby to sleep she may start to depend on it, rather than be used to settling herself. But it's up to you to decide what's best.
- Set a bedtime routine. Keep it short and simple, a bath, a nappy change and then into her night clothes. You could also try massaging your baby. Follow this up with a story or song. Finish the bedtime ritual in the room your baby sleeps and make sure the room is a pleasant place to be. This routine should last no longer than 45 minutes. A good baby bedtime is usually between 8.30pm to 9pm, any later and she's likely to get overtired and have a hard time falling asleep.
- Give her a security object, such as a baby blanket or stuffed toy. A great way to make a blanket or teddy bear a favourite is to keep it near you for a while so it becomes mum-scented. Babies have a strong sense of smell, and if she startles awake, the smell of you will calm her down.
- Let her cry it out for a bit. This approach is
suitable once your baby is four or five months old. Parents often think
this method of sleep training involves leaving babies alone to cry for
as long it takes before they fall asleep. But cry it out simply refers
to any sleep-training approach that says it's fine to let a baby cry for
a specified, usually short, period of time before offering comfort.
If your baby is crying after you've put her down, go to her. Pat her gently and tell her everything's fine, but it's time for sleep. Be gentle, but firm. Leave the room. Wait for a set interval, anything from two to five minutes, then check again. Do this repeatedly until she falls asleep, extending the time between each visit. - Cuddle up. If you plan to have your baby sleeping in your bed, Comfort her so she knows it's time for sleep. Lie down together and cuddle her, pretending to sleep, firmly letting her know it's bedtime.
- Share the role of comforter with your spouse, so both of you can help your baby fall back to sleep. Once your baby is old enough to do without night-time feeding, she can learn to be comforted by your spouse. If you live in a joint family then other family members can take turns to comfort your baby at night. She might stop needing anyone when she learns there's no food coming!
- Tune in to your baby's needs. During the day, make her feel secure by carrying her in a sling. If she wakes in the night,
try to work out why. Is her nappy wet or dirty? Are her night clothes
comfortable? Has she got a cold? Is the room too hot or too cold?
If your baby is still waking after you've tucked her in bear in mind that her age will have a lot to do with how well she settles, and you may have to be adaptable according to her stage of development. Read more on establishing good sleep habits: an age-by-age guide
What can I do if lack of sleep is affecting my routine?
If your baby is constantly waking in the night it can disturb your own sleep patterns. You may find it much harder to cope with tasks the next day. Women whose sleep is disturbed because their baby has sleep problems may be prone to depression. As your child grows, it's important to sort out sleep difficulties, because it may put pressure on relationships between you and your husband, and between you and your child.
If your baby's sleep difficulties are disrupting your sleep and you feel you can't cope, talk to your doctor.

How are my baby's eating skills developing?Which foods can I offer my baby?
How are my baby's eating skills developing?
Somewhere between seven and nine months, your baby will start to develop the skills necessary to eat finger foods. She'll probably start trying to pick up objects with her thumb and forefinger. This is called the pincer grasp. She'll also continue to put everything she can into her mouth. This is another sign that she's ready to try new foods. Most babies reach for food on other people's plates at around seven or eight months of age. Your baby is just trying to mimic the way you eat. She may also grab the spoon you are using to feed her. This can make feeding her a little more tricky. Try giving her a spoon to hold while you feed her with another.
She'll start to imitate chewing patterns as well, moving her jaw from side to side. She still doesn't have enough teeth to actually chew yet, but it's important she gets used to swallowing lumpier foods.
Which foods can I offer my baby?
Offer her foods like mashed rice with curd, dal, or any seasonal vegetable and softish finger foods as well as smooth purées.This is also the time to start offering her finger foods such as:
- sticks of well-cooked carrot
- bite sized pieces of soft fleshy fruits such as musk melon, water melon, sapotas (cheeku), ripe papaya, pear, mango or banana
- unsalted breadsticks
- boiled potato wedges
- small pieces of paneer
- boiled macaroni with a bit of butter or cheese
- toast
- small pieces of cucumber
- peeled chunks of apple
This will help your baby get used to feeding herself. It is best not to give your baby sweets, biscuits and rusks. They don't offer many nutrients and your baby may get into the habit of expecting sweet snacks.
You baby may now enjoy foods that are more filling and have stronger flavours. You can introduce her to:
- soft well cooked pasta shapes
- bite sized steamed vegetables -such as peas, beans, sweet potato, cauliflower
- breads (avoid granary or multigrain breads for now because the hard pieces may increase the risk of choking)
- bite sized pieces of paranthas and chapatis
- besan cheela,moong dal cheela
- cheese and whole wheat sandwich
- small cubes or pieces of cheese
- rice cakes or mini idlis
- lentils and other cooked pulses (avoid heavy and hard-to-digest chana dal, chana and rajma)
- dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach (paalak) and fenugreek (methi)
- unsalted nut butters (unless you have a family history of allergies)
- soft, cooked lean meat such as chicken or fish (carefully de-boned)
- chicken nuggets
- puffed rice (murmure or pohri)
- teething biscuits made of whole wheat flour
- breadsticks made of millet (jowar)
How often should I feed my baby?Do I need to sterilise the bottles? How do I make up formula milk?
How often should I feed my baby?
As with breastfeeding, most experts agree that you shouldn't follow a rigid schedule in the early weeks, though you may be able to work out an approximate pattern for feeding within a month or two. Offer the bottle every two to three hours at first, or when your baby seems hungry. Until your baby reaches about 4.5 kilograms, she'll probably take 30-90ml per feed. Don't force more than she seems ready to eat.Your paediatrician will advise you about suitable amounts for your baby as she grows. (Find out more on how much formula your baby needs.)
Do I need to sterilise the bottles?
Before you first use new bottles and teats, and each time that you use them, they need to be washed and sterilised carefully. You can boil the bottles and teats for at least 10 minutes to sterilise them. You can also use a steam steriliser or a microwave steriliser. How do I make up formula milk?
Follow the instructions on the packet carefully. Use boiled cooled water, which has been left to cool for no longer than half an hour. Fill the bottle to the marked level. Measure the milk powder with the scoop provided. Use a knife to level off the scoop, but avoid packing the powder down. Add this to the water in the bottle. Put the teat and cover on and then shake well. Don't be tempted to add extra scoops of formula powder as this can make your baby ill.The water used to make up formula milk should ideally be at a temperature of 70ºC or hotter. This is because powdered infant formula milk is not sterile and there is a small risk of contamination from micro-organisms if made up formula is kept.
Paediatricians advise that feeds are made up fresh for each feed. If you do need to prepare a feed for later, they suggest that freshly boiled water is kept in a sealed flask and fresh formula milk is made up when required. You should avoid making up enough feed for a whole day in advance, or warming up bottles of formula milk, which has been made in advance from powder.
If your baby does not finish the entire formula, do not be tempted to keep the leftover milk for the next feed. In our humid weather conditions, kept formula milk carries the risk of contamination and thereby infection. It is best to throw away the leftover milk.
What's the best way to warm a bottle of expressed milk or ready-to-use formula?
If you are using expressed breastmilk or ready-to-use formula, when you're ready to feed your baby, warm a bottle in a pan, jug or bowl of hot -- not boiling -- water; you can also buy a bottle warmer specially designed for this purpose. You should not heat the expressed breastmilk or ready-to-use formula directly over the gas stove as it can destroy the essential antibodies.
It's best not to use a microwave to heat a bottle of breastmilk or ready-to-use formula milk; since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, which could burn your baby's mouth. You should not re-warm bottles of milk of any kind.
How can I make sure my baby is drinking comfortably?
Like so much with babies, you'll need to listen and observe. If you hear a lot of noisy sucking sounds while she drinks, she may be taking in too much air. To help your baby swallow less air, hold her at a 45-degree angle. Also, take care to tilt the bottle so that the teat and neck are always filled with formula.Never leave your baby to feed unattended by propping the bottle up. Besides not providing you or your baby with time for bonding and snuggling, it could make her choke.
Bottlefeeding, like breastfeeding, can be a wonderful time for nurturing your baby by holding her close.
colic pain use niksheopa baby herbal water
Colic is a term used for uncontrollable crying by a healthy baby under three months of age for no apparent reason. Colicky babies cry a lot more than others and can be difficult to comfort.
Taking care of a newborn is a challenge for any parent. When your baby is colicky, you may feel overwhelmed and frustrated because you can't help her. You may be exhausted trying to comfort her and weepy from lack of sleep.
Here are some possible reasons for your baby’s colic and what you can do about them:
Taking care of a newborn is a challenge for any parent. When your baby is colicky, you may feel overwhelmed and frustrated because you can't help her. You may be exhausted trying to comfort her and weepy from lack of sleep.
Here are some possible reasons for your baby’s colic and what you can do about them:
- Your baby's nervous system is immature and unsettled. Your baby may cry less if she is swaddled or carried in a sling, or gently rocked in a jhoola. You can even sing to her, take her on a car-ride, or let her listen to the soft hum of a home appliance. Your baby may calm down if she sucks on a dummy or her fingers, or if you massage her gently, or take her for a walk.
- Your baby is suffering from painful wind. Burp her frequently after her feeds. If it’s a severe case of wind, your doctor may suggest an antispasmodic medication. You may also like to try chamomile which is a homeopathic remedy for colic.
- Your baby may be having a reaction to her milk. If your baby is breastfed, you can try changing your diet to see if you notice less crying. Spicy food, high-fibre grains, beans, broccoli and cabbage, caffeine and dairy products may be the problem. You may want to start eliminating these from your diet one by one, under the guidance of your doctor. If your baby is formula fed, talk with your doctor before changing the type of milk you use.
- Your baby may simply be highly sensitive and difficult to comfort. This is usually the case with premature babies and babies recovering from a difficult birth who need some catch-up time.

History of gripe water ornikshepa babyherbal water
History
Various remedies to help infants sleep during restlessness and to combat minor upset stomachs in babies have been around for centuries in different cultures, but the first "gripe water" was formulated in England in 1851 and used by English nannies. Gripe water was discovered accidentally by William Woodward, an English pharmacist who did his apprenticeship in Boston, Linconshire, and later bought a business in Nottingham[1] and quickly became adopted as a prescription by physicians.[2] In the 1840s babies in Eastern England were afflicted by a condition known as "fen fever", and during that time there was also an outbreak of malaria in England.[3] Woodward took his inspiration from the manner in which malaria as well as "fen fever" was being treated and noted that the formula used to treat fen fever was also an effective "soother of fretful babies and provided relief from gastrointestinal troubles in infants." The original Woodward's Gripe Water contained 3.6% alcohol, dill oil, sodium bicarbonate, sugar, and water. Woodward registered "Gripe Water" as a trademark in 1876.[4] It was initially marketed with the slogan "Granny told Mother and Mother told me."In 1993, the United States Food and Drug Administration ordered an automatic detention of all shipments of Woodward's into the U.S. on the basis of its being an unapproved drug.[5] In response of the FDA's import alert, Woodward's and other manufacturers have continued marketing the products, but as a dietary supplement.[1]

This air collects as a bubble in the stomach and produces discomfort and colic pains if not dispersed.A few drops of
nikshepa babybherbal water
given immediately after a feed will result in a prompt eructation and consequent comfort to the child. Indigestion in children is frequently caused by curd formation in the stomach. Some children, particularly bottle-fed infants, vomit large hard curds. It is assumed that by displacing the calcium with sodium in the curds from its combination with casein (calcium caseinate) they produce curds which are softer and smaller in size.DOSAGE

Colic, Pain Abdomen -pain in all ages use nikshepa baby herbal water
This remedy is specific in colic in gouty and rheumatic subjects, when the well-known griping pains forcing the patient to bend double or press somethingpa baby hard into the abdomen are present. It is a colic caused by flatus, undigested food or cold, or perhaps some violent emotion such as a fit of anger There may be present diarrhea, and the griping is with and preceding the same and emission of flatus or stool will relieve the colic. It is also a most useful remedy in menstrual or vesical colic, but in all the forms of colic to which Colocynth is applicable it is necessary that the nervous element predominate over the inflammatory. Indeed, it is of little use in inflammatory colic. Aconite. Inflammatory colic forcing patient to bend double, but no relief therefrom, it is only in the nervous form that pressure relieves. Veratrum album. Pains forcing patient to bend double, must walk about for relief, cold sweat. Painful distention of the abdomen and constipation carbonica. Griping, colicky pain, doubling patient up, but accompanied with green, slimy stools, after eating fruit or vegetables. Causticum. Sometimes of use after Colocynth fails.
#Dioscorea [Dios]
Pain about umbilical region, continuous and constant, and associated with paroxysms of great intensity, flatulent spasms,so-called, relieved by stretching the body out rather than by bending double. Bilious, rheumatic and neuralgic colics. Pains radiate to chest and back; it is a most valuable remedy in certain forms of dyspepsia which are marked with much colicky pain. Dioscorea is most useful in painful enteralgias which are relieved by bending backwards. The Eclectic School uses this remedy for gall stones, claiming that it is almost specific. It is usually given in doses of 20 to 40 drops in 4 ounces of water, a teaspoonful every 30 minutes to two hours. It seems to relax the circular muscular fibres of the duct.
Haemorrhoidal colic or colic from accumulation of flatus, pressing up and down ; spasmodic colic from flatulence. Deep seated hypogastric pain, abdomen hard and drawn in, not distended. Colic from dietetic errors or in brandy o coffee drinkers; pains worse on motion, pains pinching and contractive, griping as if intestines were rubbed between stones. Pulsatilla. Colic with chilliness from pastry or rich food, loud rumbling and gurgling in abdomen. Flatulent colic of hysterical females and colics of pregnant women, accompanied with a frequent desire to urinate.
#Chamomilla [Cham]
Suits especially colic in women and children. Colic with hot cheeks, red face and perspiration preceding an attack of intestinal catarrh. Colic form anger, worse from warmth, flatulent colic. There is atony of the digestive apparatus and digestion is at a standstill; the neuralgia is peripheral and the abdomen distended like a drum. It seems as if places in the abdomen would break through. Staphisagria. Colic from anger or following abdominal operations. Belladonna. Colic of infants is well met by Belladonna. The child bends backwards and screams, and the transverse colon protrudes like a pad. There is congestion of the intestines. It is rather an enteritis than an enteralgia.
Griping colic like a hand clutching the intestines, cutting pains shooting across abdomen from left to right, after acid or unripe fruit. The colic is worse by motion and better during rest.
Cocc]
Nervous colic, worse at night, accompanied by flatulence, but discharge of flatus gives no relief, as more is constantly formed. Same pain in right hypochondrium, worse bending forward. Constipation is an accompaniment. Menstrual colic, pain in lower part of abdomen with a disposition to relapses. Hysterical colic. Ignatia. Attacks of colic in hysterical people, waking them out of sleep; colic from grief.
Abdominal pain radiating in all directions, walls drawn in; this, however, is not essentially a nervous colic. There are cramps in the legs and obstinate constipation accompanies, but not flatulence. The abdomen is as hard as a stone, sensation as if the abdominal wall were drawn to back by string, better from rubbing and hard pressure. Lead produces one of the most violent colics of any drug and this colic is sometimes difficult to cure. Opium. Almost specific for lead colic. Other remedies in lead colic, are Belladonna, Alumina, Alum, Platina and Nux.
Inflammatory colic, abdomen hard; violent spasms of colic as if a knife were thrust into abdomen. Greatly aggravated by drinking cold water. The pains are violent, intermitting with great uneasiness and screaming. Cuprum arsenicosum is a valuable remedy for violent enteralgias. Stannum. Colic in young children relieved by pressure.
